Work Package 1: Data management
General information
Method selection, configuration and harmonisation
WP1 develops and sets up the methodology that will be used to assess the competitiveness of European aquaculture and fisheries sectors. The methodology, which will use both macro-economic and micro-economic data as a basis, will build upon the methodology used in the Fishery Competitive Index which breaks down competitiveness into 3 major themes (Creating stability, Stimulating environment and Competence of the industry). The assessment methodology will be extended to cover aquaculture production and it will be revised to strengthen areas of product development, value chain management, marketing and innovation. The result will be a comprehensive index for fisheries and aquaculture competitiveness (FACI). On a disaggregated level, the index can be used to benchmark individual producers within a given sector. On an aggregated level, the index can be used to compare the competitiveness of sectors in different countries (as the original FCI work did) or different production sectors in the same country. The index will be computerised for data exploration in WP2 and WP3 and for modelling in WP5. An online resource will be created that allows for self-assessment.
Deliverables
D1.1 - Guidelines for data collection methods, data names and types, and granularity
The overall objective of PrimeFish is to enhance the economic sustainability and competitiveness in the European fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The main goal of WP1 in PrimeFish is to select, develop, extend and harmonise the use of various methodologies involved in assessing the competitiveness of said sectors. This includes data collection- and analysis methods/procedures, as well as developing and extending said methodology to cover specific species.
All participants in PrimeFish, who over the course of the project generates or extracts data, will have to provide various information on the data sets used, in accordance with the H2020 Open Research Data Pilot. This includes the origin of the data, collection methods, names and types used as well as the granularity. This goes for both extracted data and data generated as part of PrimeFish. Based on input from the project participants, deliverable 1.1 offers a report, which will serve as guidelines in order to provide consistency between data sets. Further, it will function as an aid for future work on data collection and data processing.
D1.2 - Data Management Plan
The main goal of WP1 in PrimeFish is to select, develop, extend and harmonize the use of various methodologies involved in assessing the competitiveness of the European fisheries- and aquaculture sectors, including data collection- and analysis methods/procedures, as well as developing and extending said methodology to cover specific species. Feedback will also be collected from the respective method users in order to evaluate the aptitude of the respective methods. Lastly, as part of the Horizon 2020 Open Research Data Pilot, a "data management plan" (DMP) will be created. This latter objective is the main goal in Task 1.2/Deliverable 1.2. All participants involved in PrimeFish who, over the course of the project, generates data will have to create a DMP. This DMP will outline what sort of data the project is expected to generate, how it will be preserved and whether and how it will be made accessible. This includes already existing data extracted from different sources, as well as new data developed.
D1.3 - Guidelines for data analysis methods, with links to collected data types
The aim of PrimeFish is to improve the economic sustainability of European fisheries and aquaculture. The work done in PrimeFish will be based on data gathered from individual production companies, industry and sales organisations, consumers and public sources. This wide range of sources entails that a great deal of diverse data will be produced over the course of the project. Work package 1 (WP1) involves the selection, configuration and harmonisation of data collection methods, data curation and data analysis methods. The latter part is the focus of deliverable 1.3 "Guidelines on data analysis methods". Participants in PrimeFish, who are involved in the analysis of different types of data, have to submit a short overview, a one-page form, detailing what methods they will use. This is needed to enable harmonization between similar data sets in order to produce a more congruent result. The availability of a document such as this might facilitate communication between project participants who are utilizing the same methods for similar data, or those who have similar data, but are not using the same approach.
